Richard Deane is the newly appointed Associate Principal horn of the New York Philharmonic beginning in the 2014-15 Season. Previously, he was the third horn of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra since 1987, participating in over 80 recordings, and 20 Grammy winners, for Telarc International during that period.  Mr. Deane is a native of Richmond, KY, where he began his horn studies with Stanley Lawson. He received a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Myron Bloom, and a Bachelor of Music degree summa cum laude from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Michael Hatfield. Other teachers have included Jerry Peel at the University of Miami and David Wakefield at the Aspen Music Festival. Mr. Deane was a first prize winner in the American Horn Competition in 1987. He has played Principal Horn with the Colorado Philharmonic (summers of 1985 and 1987) and the Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia (1985-87).

In Atlanta, Mr. Deane performed with the Atlanta Chamber Players, and was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet, touring Norway with that group as part of the Olympic cultural exchange between Lillehammer and Atlanta. In May of 1999 Mr. Deane was a featured artist at the International Horn Society Convention held at the University of Georgia in Athens. In addition to teaching master classes at such schools as the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Eastman School of Music, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Georgia State University, Cleveland State University, and Eastern Kentucky University, Mr. Deane was visiting professor of horn at the University of Georgia from 2006 until 2014. He also served as Principal Horn of the Brevard Music Festival in North Carolina each summer from 2006 until 2013. His article, “The Third Horn Brahms Experience,” was published in the Spring 2007 edition of The Horn Call — the journal of the International Horn Society — and his first method book, “The Efficient Approach: Accelerated Development for the Horn,” was published by the Atlanta Brass Society Press.

Mr. Deane is currently a member of the New York Philharmonic Principal Brass Quintet, performing concerts and masterclasses throughout the United States during the year. Currently the Quintet is slated for residencies and concerts at the Eastman School of Music, the Colburn School, Skidmore College, and Monterey State University during the 2015-16 season. Other recent chamber music performances have included a collaboration with tenor Nicholas Phan at Le Poisson Rouge in New York (Britten - Canticle III) and an upcoming Brahms Horn Trio with Hyunju Lee and William Wolfram at Merkin Hall on February 14, 2016.

In New York, Mr. Deane continues his teaching studio that for three decades has sent students on to such institutions as the Curtis Institute of Music, Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Eastman School of Music, New England Conservatory, Boston University, Northwestern University, University of Michigan, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory, Oberlin College, University of Georgia, and many others.

In addition, Mr. Deane has been named to the faculty of the Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts beginning in the fall of 2016.
